Self Preconference

The preconference on the self will be held on Thursday October 14th at the conference hotel from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. All are welcome to attend.  The cost of the conference is $35 for graduate students, and $45 for faculty.  The cost includes a continental breakfast before the conference, and beverages and snacks during breaks.  The deadline for registration is October 7th. People who would like to attend after the deadline are still welcome but the cost will be $50. Any questions about the conference can be directed to Steve Spencer (sspencer@watarts.uwaterloo.ca) or Bill Klein (wmklein@pitt.edu) who are organizing the conference.

Person Memory Interest Group

PMIG, the preconference for social cognition researchers, is organized by David L. Hamilton and Eliot R. Smith.  This year it will take place October 13-14 at the Stagecoach Convention Center in Salado, Texas, a couple of hours south of the Dallas/Fort Worth airport.  All are invited to attend.  For up-to-date information and a copy of the letter of invitation and registration form, see the PMIG website at http://www.indiana.edu/~soccog/pmig.html
The registration deadline is Sept. 1, 2004.


Small Groups

The 12th Annual Pre-Conference on Small Groups, organized by Laurie Weingart and Carsten De Dreu, will be held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology (SESP) on Thursday, October 14th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Trinity Central Room of the Renaissance Worthington Hotel, Fort Worth, Texas. Participants who are interested in attending the Preconference, but are not planning to attend SESP are welcome.

This year’s presentations will highlight new research on a range of topics including

    • Peter J. Carnevale and Alison Kaufman, New York University
    "Conflict over property: Group endowment and identity"
    • Tatsya Kameda, Hokkaido University, and Scott Tindale, Loyola University
    "Groups as adaptive device: Human docility and group aggregation mechanisms in
     evolutionary context"
    • Tony Manstead, Cardiff University
     "Emotion in social relations"
    • Bernard Nijstad, University of Amsterdam
     "Group decision delay"
    • Katherine Phillips-Williams, Northwestern University
     “Group diversity and performance” (working title)
    • Eric Van Dijk, Leiden University
     “Tacit coordination in mixed-motive situations”

Cost for the preconference is $75.00 (U.S.), which includes snacks and refreshments during morning and afternoon breaks, and a lunch buffet. Any questions about the preconference can be directed to either Carsten De Dreu (c.k.w.dedreu@uva.nl) or Laurie Weingart (weingart@andrew.cmu.edu).
